Respect/Equality

Here is our latest completed project!  The students were given the question, "How does Glenbrook demonstrate an understanding of respect and equality for all students?"
Students were able to show this however they wanted, as long as it included some sort of technology. There are a few sound glitches (unable to hear what some of them are saying) so we used that as a learning experience to always check over our work before sending it to the teacher. ;)

The students were so creative with their approach. We had students using the green screen, iMovie, Pic Collage, puppet shows, confessional videos, etc.

What I am the most impressed with is that ALL students had it submitted on time!  We discussed this a lot, in preparation for Middle School. We have talked about how even when partners are absent, we still need to work on the project, because the due date is not going to change.

Amazing job, 5th Graders!

5th Grade Challenge #1

As us 5th Grade teachers sat down before school started, we had a vision of making sure our students were able to join together at least once a month.  We are a team, all of us, and we wanted to make sure it felt like it.  Many of the students don't realize that what we do in our individual classrooms is actually planned out together. We wanted to make sure our students are receiving the same material, just presented differently based on the teacher's teaching style.

One big way we have been joining together is for our STEM Challenges/5th Grade Challenges.  We have one planned out for every month. These challenges encourage our students to think outside of the box, learn positive teamwork skills, and learn from mistakes/failures.

These pictures are from our very first challenge- The Marshmallow Challenge. This challenge is actually performed across the world. Check out its movement here: Marshmallow Challenge

PBIS Surprise

I had to share this picture I snapped!  This is the look on the students' faces when I told them Andi & Alex from The Voice are coming to Glenbrook!  They are beyond excited!

Katie McKy

10/7- We were extremely lucky to welcome author Katie Mcky to Glenbrook Elementary!  First, she did a skit in front of our whole school, then 5th Grade was allowed to stay after for some writing instruction, and finally those students who were chosen as part of the writing contest were able to have a smaller group meeting with her the following day.  Mcky does a phenomenal job of getting students to write without allowing distractions. Us teachers even tested this theory. We had leaf blowers and water bottles, as we tried to get the students to look up from their paper. The students won this battle! ;)

Buddies!!

We LOVE our 2nd Grade Buddies!  We meet with our buddies once a month to help with a variety of projects. On 10/13 we read about bats, and watched a video, then we created a bat project using the facts we had learned. :)

Veteran's Day

11/11- 5th Grade was fortunate enough to have Grayson's aunt, Krystal, come in and speak with us on Veteran's Day.  She told us about her experiences and answered many of our questions! Even mine... "Why is the American Flag facing the opposite way on army uniforms?" I had been wondering that for a while, and the answer made perfect sense. ;) Thank you Krystal for your service, and thank you to all other past, present, and future veterans!

Taxi Ride

Our classroom had a lucky winner of a "Taxi Ride" down to lunch... brought to you by Mr. Sufka! Too much fun!  Congratulations Yesica! :)
